Signs that you are suffering from heat stroke

Spending time by the beach in the sun is incredibly relaxing and enjoyable, however spending too much time in the sun without shade can be dangerous to both adults and children.

The steps below highlight how to tell if you are suffering from heat exhaustion/heat stroke as well as how to prevent this in the future.

Heat exhaustion is where you become very hot and start to lose water or salt from your body. Whilst Heatstroke is where the body is no longer able to cool itself and a person’s body temperature becomes dangerously high. Heatstroke is the less common of the two conditions but is the most fatal, as it can put a strain on the heart, lungs, liver kidneys and has the potential to become life threatening.  If heat exhaustion isn’t treated then it has the potential to turn into heatstroke.

Signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke include:

  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • a decrease in blood pressure
  • a headache
  • muscle cramps
  • tiredness and weakness
  • feeling/being sick
  • heavy sweating
  • intense thirstiness
  • a fast pulse
  • urinating less often and having much darker urine than usual

If you notice yourself/someone else exhibiting signs of heatstroke/heat exhaustion you must:

  • help them to lie down in a cool place – such as an air conditioned room or if outdoors somewhere in the shade
  • remove any unnecessary clothing to expose as much of their skin as possible
  • use sponges, flannels and ice packs to cool their skin (neck and armpits
  • fan their skin whilst it’s moist to help water evaporate, which will cool them down
  • ensure they drink plenty of drink fluids preferable water
