Traveling pregnant

In a previous article, we explained the considerations to take into account when traveling whilst pregnant. In this article, you will find some tips on how to have a pleasant flight when pregnant.

  1. The first thing you should do before traveling is to consult with your gynecologist and then with the airline you are flying with, since many companies won’t let you fly after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
  2. We also recommend that you check the countries that you shouldn’t travel while pregnant. For example, tropical countries or endemic areas of yellow fever or malaria are not recommended since the yellow fever vaccine is contraindicated in pregnancy, and because in case of gastroenteritis, the risk of dehydration is greater in pregnant women. It’s also not advisable to travel to places where the Zika virus is spreading because if you get infected, the infection could be transmitted to the baby.
  3. Get a travel insurance that adapts to your needs to be protected in case of emergency.
  4. Remember to carry your  Health Insurance card with you.
  5. Don’t worry about the metal detector arch, as it is not harmful to either the mother or the fetus.
  6. Book the front row seats to have more space and be able to exercise and stretch to activate your blood circulation. Also, select an aisle seat to be able to go to the bathroom easily and without disturbing anyone.
  7. Fasten your seatbelt when you are in your seat as it can help prevent injuries in case of turbulence.
  8. Wear comfortable clothes to move easily
  9. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water
  10. Walk down the aisle and do exercises to improve blood circulation and fluid retention
  11. Have light meals to avoid reflux and feel less heavy.
  12. Make sure you have snacks such as nuts, in case you get nausea
  13. Seek medical attention immediately if you feel abdominal pain or cramping, if you have contractions, severe headaches, swelling of the legs, vaginal bleeding, vision problems or if you feel your waters have broken.
